Telares Uruapan started
as a workshop of hand dyed and hand woven cloth. Originally
the dyeing and washing of the thread took place at a large
fresh water spring where some of the women of Uruapan also
washed their clothes. Today the washing and dyeing take
place in large stainless steel tubs. The dyed thread must
be starched to be able to weave an adequate textured cloth
and is dried in the open by the rays of the sun. The wooden
hand warping frame lines up the threads for the warp, as
much as three hundred meters at a time, to the required
width. The warp, is then transferred to the loom to be woven.
This is a delicate process performed by each weaver, maintaining
adequate tension on the warp, watching for broken threads
and creating a continuous, even cloth looking all the while
as though dancing on the loom.
Once woven, the cloth is measured, inspected and stored
in bolts. Some is turned into finished products: bedspreads,
table linens, curtains, clothing, bags, cushions, and other
decorator items. The bolt goods are sold by the meter to
various clients for use in hotel decoration, private homes
and offices, and for upholstering.
